When can I start Pregnancy Yoga?
It is advisable to wait until you are over 12 weeks pregnant.
Yet every woman is different and is ready to start when her body tells
her it is time as long as she has no complications with her pregnancy and has
gotten the ok from her doctor or midwife. This typically occurs at the beginning
of the second trimester or not start until the third trimester.
What is Pregnancy Yoga?
The word Yoga means union - the practice of Yoga unites body, mind
and spirit through postures and breathing. During a pregnancy yoga class, ths union extends to the connection between mother and developing baby.
What evidence is there that Yoga for Pregnancy works?
Pregnancy Yoga is widely recommended by maternity hospitals, obstetricians
and midwives worldwide. The benefits of Yoga are time tested, and
proven. In more recent years, the benefits, especially the vital role
of the breathing, has proved its worth in the labour ward. Yoga is part
of the antenatal educational programme in many hospitals including the
National Maternity Hospital, in Dublin.
Anecdotal evidence from mothers also supports the theory that it is a very positive and empowering experience.
What can I hope to gain from Yoga for Pregnancy?
The aim of Yoga during your pregnancy is to encourage you to realise
your own strength by learning to trust your body and adapt to the many
changes, not just within your body but also of your moods and emotions.
Pregnancy Yoga classes can help and prevent many of the common ailments and
discomforts of pregnancy e.g. sciatica, backache and sleeplessness.
It deepens the connection between you and your growing child
within.
Do I need to bring my own Yoga mat and what do I wear?
Yoga mats, blankets, blocks etc are provided but please feel free to
bring an extra towel or blanket if you wish. We suggest wearing loose,
comfortable clothing. Socks are reccomended for the relaxation sequence.
